Science Fiction by Alan Dean Foster

Growing up, I never gave a thought to being a writer. All I ever wanted to be was a traveler and explorer. Science-fiction allowed me to go places that were otherwise inaccessible, which is why I started reading it. I was going to be a lawyer, but I got saved.

-- Alan Dean Foster, via BrainyQuote

Alan Dean Foster is one of the more versatile speculative-fiction writers alive. He's written pure "hard-science" SF, softer SF, adventure, movie novelizations, and several kinds of fantasy. This page is where I've listed my collection of Foster SF novels. I have a separate page for his fantasy works.

The Adventures of Flinx and Pip

Flinx (short for Philip Lynx) is a young man from the planet Moth, within the Humanx Commonwealth. Pip is his "minidrag" (miniature dragon) a flying snake from the planet Alaspin. Flinx has some mental powers that he doesn't understand, and a penchant for getting into trouble. Pip has an equal talent for getting its master out of trouble, occasionally by use of its extremely lethal venom, which it can spit at targets up to a couple of meters away. Their story arcs over about 15 books, of which I have about 8 and have read most of the rest.

The Humanx Commonwealth

The "Humanx Commonwealth" is a huge interstellar federation comprised of many planets and many sapient species. The two dominant species are humans, from Earth, and an eight-limbed insectoid race called the thranx, who hail from the world they call Hivehom. Besides being the backdrop for the large story arc of Flinx and Pip, the Humanx Commonwealth provides fodder for a number of independent novels.

One of Foster's better and more interesting Humanx Commonwealth novels. Cachalot is a world whose surface is almost all one vast ocean. Humanity gave it to the remnants of the great whales, as atonement for the slaughters of whales over the centuries. Now the whales want only to be left alone. So humans are restricted to only a few atolls and some floating towns. But something is destroying the towns -- something that may threaten whales and humans alike.
